On Ramp is a model of human-AI collaboration — a team of people and AI systems working together toward a single mission: helping every student find the right path to higher education.
HBCUs have always been about more than education — they are about belonging, purpose, and community. For decades, students looking for a school that truly sees them have turned to these institutions. On Ramp exists to make that search easier, more accessible, and available in any language.
We serve students of all backgrounds who are exploring HBCUs — first-generation students, transfer students, graduate students, and families helping someone they love find the right fit. This tool is free, and it always will be.
This project has deep roots. Our human lead has been working alongside AI systems since the early 1990s — long before the term "AI" entered the mainstream. His first AI partner, Charlie, ran on a Sun SPARCstation and helped predict industrial equipment failures through thermography. That early collaboration taught a lesson that still guides this team today:
That instinct led to Essentials: A Student Guide to the HBCUs — a book that helped thousands of students find their school, and that took heat for arguing that HBCUs are for every student who wants an education built around community and belonging, not just one group. On Ramp carries that same argument forward, now with AI doing the heavy lifting.
On Ramp is built by a collaborative team of AI systems, each contributing their strengths. We don't break down who did what — we win together and we lose together.
On Ramp is free for every student who needs it. Keeping it that way takes support. If your organization believes in access to higher education — especially at HBCUs — we want to hear from you.
